Robert Batyi (born December 8, 1979, in Szombathely, Hungary) is a distinguished music and film producer, conductor, and double bass artist. He is the founder and artistic director of the SziRom Symphonic Roma Orchestra, a pioneering ensemble that bridges cultures through the universal language of music. Renowned for his artistry in classical performance and his dedication to musical diplomacy, Batyi promotes the values of peace and unity across the globe.

Education and Early Career

Robert pursued his academic studies simultaneously at the University of Pecs and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, later earning his master’s degree in Karlsruhe under Prof. Wolfgang Güttler—one of the most influential double bass professors in history and former principal bassist of Herbert von Karajan’s Berlin Philharmonic. Over time, Batyi not only became Güttler’s student but also his colleague and collaborator.

In 2008, he participated in the 5th Symphonic Masterclass of the Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra in Munich, conducted by Sir Colin Davis. Since 1991, he has performed with numerous orchestras, gaining extensive symphonic and chamber music experience.

Philharmonie der Nationen and Grammy Recognition

After completing his studies, Batyi joined the Philharmonie der Nationen, founded by Leonard Bernstein, Justus Frantz, and Yehudi Menuhin. Created after the fall of the Berlin Wall, this orchestra symbolizes peace and international unity, and is recognized among the top ten symphony orchestras in the world.

From 2009 onward, he worked closely with Justus Frantz as the orchestra’s manager. Between 2010 and 2016, he served as personal assistant, project and concert coordinator, media director, and producer for the Philharmonie der Nationen. During this period, he played a key role in organizing and producing Justus Frantz’s Grammy Award-winning recording, collaborating in both the planning and performance stages.

The SziRom Symphonic Roma Orchestra

In 2010, Batyi was appointed Chairman of the Zene a Jövőért (Music for the Future) Foundation. Six years later, he founded the SziRom Symphonic Roma Orchestra, an ensemble that quickly gained international recognition.

Under his direction, SziRom has become a symbol of Roma excellence in classical music, representing Hungarian culture on prestigious international stages. The orchestra’s mission is to share the message of peace, cultural unity, and human dignity through the power of art.

Batyi Róbert continues to inspire audiences worldwide as a musical diplomat, fostering understanding among nations through the universal and timeless language of music.

Musical Diplomacy

SziRom Symphonic Roma Orchestra

Musical Diplomacy Through Art – Roma Musicians as Ambassadors of Culture

The SziRom Symphonic Roma Orchestra is not only an outstanding performer of classical music but also a pioneer of musical diplomacy – a messenger of peace, unity, and human dignity throughout the world.

The orchestra’s mission is to build bridges through the power of music among cultures, religions, and nations, promoting the values of tolerance, dialogue, and social inclusion.

Its uniqueness lies in the fact that Roma artists perform the greatest masterpieces of the classical repertoire, making the ensemble itself a living symbol of cultural equality and togetherness.

Musical Diplomacy and the Voice of Roma Culture in the Heart of Europe

Music has always been more than art – behind the notes lie stories, destinies, and cultures.

The music of the Roma people is not only a cultural heritage but also a historical chronicle – a sonic record of journey, struggle, adaptation, and freedom.

The SziRom Symphonic Roma Orchestra embodies this legacy in a contemporary form, speaking the universal language of classical music.

Each performance conveys a message of peace, respect, and harmony while showcasing the richness of Roma culture on international stages.

The Birth of SziRom – A Bridge Between Tradition and Modernity

Founded in Hungary, the orchestra represents all of Europe in spirit.

Its founder and artistic director, Róbert Batyi – conductor, music and film producer – combines classical tradition with social responsibility and diplomatic sensitivity, creating a platform where art becomes a tool for understanding among nations.

The foundation of SziRom was inspired by two great European masters, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Güttler and Prof. Dr. Justus Frantz, both of whom proved through their life’s work that music transcends all political, ethnic, and religious boundaries.

The creation of the orchestra was therefore not only an artistic act but also a cultural-diplomatic statement – a redefinition of Roma identity on the musical map of 21st-century Europe.
